Sweden to Transfer Modern Tridon Mk2 Air Defense Systems to Ukraine
Sweden has taken a significant step in supporting Ukraine by announcing the transfer of modern Tridon Mk2 air defense systems. The Swedish Ministry of Defense has allocated 400 million euros for the procurement of these systems, which constitutes nearly one-third of a new military aid package worth 1.2 billion euros announced in February this year.
Sweden has made a significant commitment to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities by announcing the transfer of advanced Tridon Mk2 air defense systems. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Sweden will allocate 400 million euros for the procurement of these systems, which represents approximately one-third of a new military assistance package totaling 1.2 billion euros that was unveiled in February of this year.
The Tridon Mk2 systems are mobile, medium-range air defense systems that were first introduced in 2024. They are designed to operate effectively in all weather conditions, both day and night, making them exceptionally efficient in modern combat scenarios. One of the key advantages of the Tridon Mk2 is its relatively low cost per shot, which allows for resource conservation during military operations.
The Tridon Mk2 system is equipped with a 40mm Bofors 40 Mk4 automatic cannon, capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 12 kilometers. This cannon can fire up to 300 rounds per minute but also has the capability to reduce the firing rate to 200 rounds per minute, enabling ammunition conservation and adaptation to specific fire missions.
The Tridon Mk2 cannon utilizes programmable ammunition that detonates just before reaching its target, creating a cloud of debris. This significantly enhances its effectiveness against aerial drones and cruise missiles, which pose a serious threat to both military and civilian installations.
The Tridon Mk2 system can be mounted on various platforms, including tracked armored all-terrain vehicles like the BvS 10 or Scania trucks. Thanks to its electric drives, the system integrates easily with different platforms, making it more versatile compared to systems that rely on hydraulic drives.
The Swedish Tridon Mk2 represents a universal air defense system that combines high efficiency, a wide range of applications, and low operational costs. It is capable of simultaneously countering multiple threats, including strike and reconnaissance drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, the Swedish government has also introduced a new support package for Ukraine for the year 2026, valued at approximately 240 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about 25.7 million US dollars. This package is part of Sweden's ongoing support for Ukraine in its fight for independence and security.
Sweden continues to demonstrate its determination to support Ukraine by providing the necessary resources and technologies that will help strengthen the country's defense capabilities amid growing threats. This move serves as an important signal of international solidarity and readiness to assist Ukraine in its struggle for freedom and territorial integrity.
