Sweden to Provide Ukraine with Advanced Tridon Mk2 Air Defense Systems
Sweden has announced its decision to supply Ukraine with the cutting-edge Tridon Mk2 air defense systems, which will play a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine's air defense capabilities against threats such as Shahed drones and other aerial attacks.
Sweden has decided to provide Ukraine with the advanced Tridon Mk2 air defense systems, which will serve as a vital component in strengthening Ukraine's air defense in its fight against strike drones like the Shahed, as well as other aerial threats. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, emphasizing the significance of this step in the context of the current military situation.
The Swedish government will allocate 400 million euros for the procurement of the Tridon Mk2 systems, which accounts for nearly one-third of the new military assistance package to Ukraine, totaling 1.2 billion euros, announced in February of this year. This move reflects the increasing support for Ukraine from international partners in its struggle for independence and territorial integrity.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine noted that the new systems will significantly enhance the capabilities of Ukrainian air defense, particularly in countering strike drones such as the Shaheds, as well as other aerial targets. This indicates that Ukraine continues to actively work on strengthening its defense capabilities in response to aggression from Russia.
The Tridon Mk2 system is a mobile medium-range system that was first presented in 2024. It is capable of operating under any weather conditions, both day and night, making it extremely versatile. One of the main advantages of this system is its relatively low cost per shot, allowing for efficient resource utilization during combat operations.
The Tridon Mk2 is equipped with a 40mm Bofors 40 Mk4 automatic cannon, which has the capability to engage targets at distances of up to 12 kilometers. This cannon can fire up to 300 rounds per minute, but to conserve ammunition, the rate of fire can be reduced to 200 rounds per minute, allowing the system to adapt to various combat conditions and situations.
The cannon employs programmable ammunition that detonates before reaching the target, creating a cloud of debris. This enhances the effectiveness of combating drones and cruise missiles, which is particularly relevant in the context of modern warfare.
The Tridon Mk2 system can be mounted on various platforms, including tracked armored all-terrain vehicles like the BvS 10 or Scania trucks. This allows for easy integration of the system thanks to electric drives, making it even more convenient for use in field conditions.
It is worth noting that in February, Sweden announced one of the largest security assistance packages for Ukraine, which will include not only air defense systems but also radars, drones, and electronic warfare systems. This underscores the ongoing support from the international community for Ukraine in its fight for freedom and independence.
