Engineer Arrested for Spying for Russians in Dnipropetrovsk Region

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of an engineer from a defense plant in the Dnipropetrovsk region, who was recruited by Russian intelligence services. The man became an agent due to his son serving a prison sentence in Russia for drug-related crimes.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported the arrest of an engineer from a defense plant in the Dnipropetrovsk region, who was recruited by Russian special services. It has been revealed that the man became an agent due to his son, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the Russian Federation for drug offenses. In this context, the Russians promised him amnesty for his son in exchange for collecting and transmitting secret information regarding the execution of defense contracts.

According to the case materials, the detained engineer planned to utilize his access to state secrets, as well as his actual access to specialized workshops at the plant, to fulfill tasks assigned by his Russian handlers. Furthermore, Russian intelligence hoped to obtain from the agent geolocation data of high-tech facilities and the industrial production area of the enterprise, which could be used to prepare ballistic strikes.

SBU employees managed to uncover the agent's espionage activities in advance, documenting his crimes. The arrest took place directly at the suspect's workplace. During a search of the detainee, a smartphone was confiscated, which contained evidence of his collaboration with two curators from the FSB and GRU. For covert communication, they used several anonymous chats in messaging applications.

During the investigation, it was also established that the detainee was tasked with identifying potential candidates for recruitment among his colleagues and the security staff at the plant. This indicates a systematic approach by Russian intelligence services to recruit new agents and create a network of spies within Ukraine.

Investigators have notified the agent of suspicion under part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for treason committed in conditions of martial law. Currently, the perpetrator is in custody without the right to bail, facing a potential life sentence with confiscation of property.

This incident is not an isolated case, as earlier, the counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine detained a Russian agent in the Donetsk region, who was coordinating airstrikes on Kramatorsk. This highlights the activity of Russian intelligence services on Ukrainian territory and their attempts to destabilize the situation in the country using various recruitment and espionage methods.

The Security Service of Ukraine urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may threaten national security. It is also worth noting that combating espionage and treason is one of the priority areas of the SBU's activities amid the ongoing war.
