Fencer Svychkar: The Active Phase of the Fight for Olympic Licenses Approaches

Multiple-time World Championship medalist, European Champion, and finalist of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Roman Svychkar, shared insights in an interview with Ukrinform about his preparations for upcoming international competitions and the battle for Olympic licenses.

Roman Svychkar, a prominent figure in the world of fencing, has emphasized that the most significant tournament of this year will be the World Championship, scheduled to take place in July in Hong Kong. This tournament is crucial for Ukrainian fencers, as successful results could greatly influence their rankings and chances of securing licenses to participate in the Olympic Games.

In the interview, Svychkar highlighted his recent achievements in international competitions, which have propelled him to the eighth position in the world rankings. This ranking is a significant milestone, as it will allow him to start the World Championship from a more advantageous position. “This is very important because it will enable me to skip the qualifying matches and go straight to the decisive second day of the competition,” he noted.

In addition to the World Championship, Svychkar is also planning to compete in the Grand Prix tournament set to be held in Colombia in May. “This tournament will provide an opportunity to fight for qualifying points for the future,” the fencer added, emphasizing the importance of each competition in achieving his goals.

Svychkar also touched upon the upcoming 2028 Olympics, which will take place in Los Angeles. He pointed out that the active phase of the fight for Olympic licenses will commence in May 2027 and continue until April 2028. “It’s too early to talk about the team composition. Everyone needs to showcase their best in the Olympic qualifiers, which will be incredibly tough,” he stressed, adding that the selection system will likely remain the same as it was for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Furthermore, Svychkar elaborated on the selection criteria, which require participation in ten tournaments, including five stages of the World Cup, three Grand Prix events, as well as European and World Championships. This underscores the high standards set for athletes aspiring to earn licenses for the Olympic Games.

Roman Svychkar trains under the guidance of coaches Igor Reizlin and Bohdan Nikishin, with whom he competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The collaboration with experienced coaches allows Svychkar to prepare confidently for upcoming competitions and reach new heights in fencing.

Thus, Roman Svychkar is actively preparing for important international starts that could define his career path leading to the 2028 Olympics. The athlete hopes that his efforts will yield results that will enable him to continue competing for medals on the world stage.
