AI Will Not Replace Mine Clearance Experts in the Near Future - Expert
Vladimir Baida, director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, emphasized in a recent interview that despite technological advancements, artificial intelligence cannot fully replace mine clearance experts in the foreseeable future.
In a statement to the Ukrinform news agency, Vladimir Baida, the director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, underscored that the complete replacement of human mine clearance experts with artificial intelligence is not feasible in the near future. He highlighted that without the direct presence of a human on the ground requiring demining, discussing the effectiveness of this process is meaningless.
Baida explained that while artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies have significantly accelerated the work of mine clearance experts by helping process large volumes of data to prioritize areas, the process remains dangerous without human intervention. 'Currently, we clearly understand that until a person has traversed a particular area, it is impossible to speak about its demining,' he stated in response to a question regarding the possibility of replacing mine clearance experts with technology.
The director of the Humanitarian Demining Center also noted that Ukraine already has the capability to effectively utilize systems that determine which soils and territories require urgent demining. 'This is where artificial intelligence comes into play,' he emphasized, pointing out how new technologies can assist in prioritizing demining efforts.
Vladimir Baida compared modern methods with those used in the past. Previously, the analysis and decision-making process regarding which area to de-mine first could take months or even years, whereas now, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence, these processes can occur in mere seconds. This significantly enhances the efficiency of mine clearance operations and reduces risks to human life.
It is worth noting that recently, the mine clearance experts from Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) successfully neutralized the warhead of a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile, which was discovered in a field in the Kyiv region. This incident once again confirms the critical importance of the work done by mine clearance experts in ensuring safety across the country.
In light of these events, it is essential to highlight that technologies such as artificial intelligence can greatly facilitate the work of mine clearance experts but cannot completely replace the human factor in this dangerous and responsible activity. Mine clearance experts remain irreplaceable in the direct demining of territories, as their experience and skills are critically important for ensuring safety.
