Serhiy Kovalev Calls on Matviy Ponomarenko to Consider Move to European Club

Former coach of Ukraine's youth national team, Serhiy Kovalev, has highlighted the potential of 20-year-old Dynamo Kyiv striker Matviy Ponomarenko, urging him to consider a transfer to a European club.

Former coach of Ukraine's youth national team, Serhiy Kovalev, has drawn attention to the promising career of 20-year-old striker Matviy Ponomarenko from Dynamo Kyiv, encouraging him to explore the possibility of transferring to a European club. Kovalev believes that such a move could be crucial for the young footballer's career, helping him avoid the fate of other Ukrainian players who have struggled to realize their potential.

Kovalev emphasized that the earlier a player moves abroad, the more beneficial it is not only for his career but also for the club that nurtured him, as well as for the national team. It is essential for Dynamo's management to make the right decision regarding Ponomarenko's future, taking into account his potential and the need for development.

“We understand that previously players like Shaparenko and Brazhko were also considered candidates for transfers to various foreign clubs. Both started at Dynamo quite strongly, just like Ponomarenko is doing now. Therefore, it is very important that players do not 'burn out.' It is worth noting that our footballers who have gone to Europe demonstrate a high level of football and prove their competitiveness in clubs across different leagues on the continent,” Kovalev stated.

The expert also cited the example of Andriy Shevchenko, who became a player for Italian club AC Milan at the age of 22. “A vivid example is Andriy Shevchenko, who moved to AC Milan at 22. We remember how experienced players like Maldini and Costacurta took him under their wing, helping him adapt to Italian football,” he added in his comments to UA-Football.

This season, Matviy Ponomarenko has already played 17 matches for Dynamo's senior team across all competitions, scoring 10 goals. Of these, nine goals were scored in the championship, placing him at the top of the scoring charts. This success underscores his significant potential and the opportunities that could be realized in European clubs.

It was also previously reported that a former Dynamo and Karpaty striker returned to his former club in Spain, further highlighting the activity of Ukrainian footballers on the international stage. It is noteworthy that a transfer to a European club could mark an important milestone in the young striker's career, opening new horizons for his development and achievements.
