Serbia, with UNDP Support, Allocates EUR 2 Million to Strengthen Ukraine's Energy Resilience

The government of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have officially announced the signing of a new financial agreement. Under this agreement, Serbia will allocate EUR 2 million to enhance the energy resilience of Ukraine. This information was disclosed by the UNDP press service, which emphasized the significance of this initiative in light of the contemporary challenges facing the Ukrainian energy sector.

According to the terms of the agreement, the allocated funds will be utilized for the procurement and supply of high-voltage transformers. This equipment is critically important for restoring the capacity of Ukraine's electricity transmission system, which, in turn, will ensure a stable electricity supply for millions of Ukrainians. These measures are being implemented as part of the UNDP's green energy recovery program, aimed at supporting the country in its energy transformation.

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Ukraine, Andon Sapundzhi, underscored the importance of this contribution, stating: "This contribution is a tangible confirmation of our support in restoring vital services. We strive to ensure that hospitals, schools, and homes remain lit during these challenging times." His remarks reflect Serbia's deep concern regarding the situation in Ukraine and its readiness to assist in the restoration of critical infrastructure.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, Auke Lotsma, also expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with the Serbian government, noting that the assistance provided by Serbia not only addresses urgent needs but also lays the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Ukraine. This highlights the importance of international cooperation in the restoration and modernization of energy infrastructure, which has suffered significant damage due to the armed conflict.

Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the country's energy infrastructure has faced extensive destruction. According to the Fifth Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA5), the total losses in the energy sector are estimated at $88.2 billion. Specifically, the electricity subsector has incurred losses of approximately $17.1 billion, primarily affecting electricity generation and transmission facilities.

The project being implemented with Serbia's support aims to improve access to essential services such as heating, electricity, and water supply for communities in targeted areas where infrastructure has been most severely affected. This project is being carried out under the Framework Cooperation Program between Ukraine and the UN in the field of sustainable development and aligns with the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 7, which pertains to affordable and clean energy.
