SBU Detains FSB Agent Planning Terror Attack in Kyiv
On April 8, 2023, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the arrest of an agent from the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) who was preparing a terrorist attack in the capital of Ukraine. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of the state and its citizens.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) made a crucial announcement on Wednesday, April 8, 2023, regarding the apprehension of an agent from the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB). This individual was allegedly tasked by Russian intelligence services to execute a terrorist attack in Kyiv, drawing considerable attention due to the serious threat posed to the safety of the nation and its people.
According to information provided by the SBU, the suspect was planning to detonate an explosive device near the residence of a prominent leader of the Federation of Employers of Ukraine. The device, which was homemade and designed for remote detonation, was intended to explode in the morning as the target was leaving their building for work. This indicates a high level of meticulous preparation and planning for the crime.
Law enforcement officials successfully thwarted these dangerous plans by apprehending the suspect after he conducted reconnaissance at the site of the planned attack. Investigations revealed that the perpetrator was a resident of the temporarily occupied part of the Donetsk region, who had been recruited by an FSB officer in the fall of 2025. This officer specializes in subversive activities within Ukraine, and their identity has already been established.
As per the SBU's information, the agent arrived in Kyiv under the direction of the Russian intelligence service, settled into rented accommodation, and began monitoring the routes and locations frequented by the potential victim. To avoid detection, he altered his appearance and clothing, coordinating his actions through an anonymous chat in a messaging application. This demonstrates a high level of preparation and professionalism on the part of the agent.
During searches of the detained individual, law enforcement officials seized mobile devices containing evidence of his collaboration with the Russian side. Investigators have already informed him of his suspicion under part 2 of Article 111 (treason committed in a state of martial law) and parts 2 of Article 15 and 2 of Article 258 (completed attempt of terrorism). The suspect is currently in custody, facing a potential life sentence with asset confiscation.
Additionally, suspicion has also been announced against his curator, who is classified as an accomplice in the attempted terrorist attack. Ukrainian law enforcement continues to take measures to hold him accountable. This case once again underscores the serious threat posed by Russian intelligence services to Ukraine and the critical importance of the SBU's work in ensuring national security.
Thus, the detention of the FSB agent marks a significant step in the fight against terrorism and subversive activities on Ukrainian territory. The Security Service of Ukraine remains committed to preventing similar threats in the future and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
