SBU Detains FSB Agent in Odesa Preparing Contract Killings

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the arrest of a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent in Odesa who had established a cache of ammunition and firearms in the city. This information was released by the SBU on Thursday, April 9, highlighting the serious threat posed by the actions of the detained individual.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported the arrest of a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent in Odesa, who had set up a cache containing ammunition and firearms within the city. The SBU made this announcement on Thursday, April 9, emphasizing the significant danger that the actions of the detained individual represented.

According to the SBU, the weapons stored in the established cache were intended for carrying out a series of contract killings. The individual involved in the case was identified as an unemployed resident of Poltava, who was recruited by Russian operatives while searching for 'easy money' through popular Telegram channels. This fact underscores the active engagement of Russian intelligence services in recruiting Ukrainians for their criminal schemes.

After being recruited, the man was 'deployed' to Odesa, where he received geolocation information for the cache from the FSB. Reports indicate that he retrieved an F-1 hand grenade, an AK-47 assault rifle, and 30 rounds of ammunition from the site. While staying in a hotel room, the man tested the functionality of the weapons and subsequently reported back to his Russian handler about the completed task, receiving a new assignment to establish another weapons cache at a different location.

Following reconnaissance of the area, the detained individual concealed the weapons in trash containers located in the central park of Odesa and sent the coordinates to the FSB. Investigators have revealed that the Russian intelligence services planned to recruit a potential assassin who would utilize this cache to attempt an assassination on the head of one of the district territorial recruitment centers (TCK) in Odesa. If successful, the assassinations of military personnel were expected to continue.

The suspect was apprehended at his residence in Poltava, where he had returned after establishing the cache. During searches of his property, investigators seized a smartphone that he used to communicate with his Russian handler. This device has become a crucial piece of evidence in the case, confirming his connections to Russian intelligence services.

SBU investigators have informed the man of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The indictment has already been submitted to the court, and the suspect faces life imprisonment with asset forfeiture. This reflects the seriousness of the offense and the readiness of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to act decisively in combating terrorism.

Additionally, the SBU has identified the FSB handler, who has been charged in absentia with preparing a terrorist act, attempted murder, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. These actions indicate that Russian intelligence services continue to operate actively in Ukraine, attempting to destabilize the situation in the country.

Comprehensive measures are underway to hold the suspect accountable. The Security Service of Ukraine urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may indicate the presence of hostile agents operating within Ukraine.
