Ukrainian air defense units responded to the aerial attack. Authorities did not immediately disclose details on damage to the dam or surrounding infrastructure, citing security concerns. “We will report on the destruction and consequences later so as not to inform the enemy,” Syniehubov said, adding that emergency medical services, police, and State Emergency Service units were already working at the site to assess and respond to the situation. The strike recalled the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine in June 2023, which caused catastrophic flooding along the Dnipro River, submerged dozens of settlements, displaced thousands of civilians, disrupted water supplies, and triggered severe environmental damage. The collapse of the reservoir also impacted irrigation systems and access to drinking water across large parts of the region, with long-term consequences still being felt.
