On April 1, 2023, Russia executed a drone assault on western Ukraine, striking several regions and resulting in significant infrastructure damage, as reported by local officials. The drone activity was recorded in the Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia regions, prompting emergency services to be dispatched to assess the extent of the damage.
Maxim Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv Regional Administration, noted that air defense systems were engaged during the attack, with debris from downed drones discovered throughout the area. He reported that there were no casualties or major damages recorded in Lviv Oblast, urging residents to avoid approaching the drone wreckage due to the risk of explosion.
In Ternopil Oblast, a drone struck an agricultural facility in the Chortkiv district, igniting a fire, according to regional officials. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.
In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, drones targeted critical infrastructure, although there were also no reports of casualties, as stated by the regional head, Svitlana Onyshchuk. In the Kolomyia district, approximately 11,000 consumers temporarily lost electricity, with repair crews working diligently to restore power.
Journalist Vitaliy Glakhola also reported that Zakarpattia Oblast was affected by the attack, with strikes recorded in the areas of Khust and Uzhhorod. One individual sustained injuries but did not require hospitalization. A separate strike hit critical infrastructure in the city of Perechyn, leading to a localized power outage, as reported by local authorities.
This attack followed a large-scale nighttime drone assault across Ukraine, where Russia launched 339 drones during the night of March 31 to April 1, according to the Ukrainian Air Forces. Ukrainian defense systems managed to intercept some of the drones; however, several still reached their targets, causing damage to vital infrastructure.
This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by Russian drones, which have become a commonplace aspect of the war in Ukraine. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and adhere to safety measures, particularly in light of the continuous attacks.
