Russian Occupiers Again Attack Energy Infrastructure in Odesa Region with Drones
In the early hours of April 9, 2023, Russian occupiers launched another drone attack on the energy infrastructure of the Odesa region, causing significant damage and raising concerns among local residents and authorities.
During the night of April 8 to 9, 2023, Russian occupiers once again targeted the energy infrastructure of the Odesa region, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to representatives from the energy sector, this assault resulted in damage to a substation, which has sparked alarm among local residents and officials.
The incident was reported by Oleg Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration (OVA). In his statement, he noted, "The enemy continues to strike at the energy infrastructure of the Odesa region. In the evening, a drone strike damaged an energy facility. Preliminary reports indicate that there are no casualties. All relevant services have begun to address the aftermath of the strike." These words underscore the persistent nature of the threat faced by Ukrainian regions, especially in the context of ongoing warfare.
Subsequently, representatives from the DTEK company confirmed that the substation affected by the attack is a crucial component of their infrastructure. "On the evening of April 8, a significant energy facility of DTEK was severely damaged. Our teams are already on-site assessing the damaged equipment. As soon as the security situation allows, we will commence repairs. We will do everything possible to restore power to homes as quickly as possible. We thank the residents of the Odesa region for their patience and understanding!" the energy workers stated, expressing gratitude to local residents for their resilience during this challenging time.
This attack occurred against the backdrop of previous events, including explosions reported in Izmail, also located in the Odesa region, during the night of April 7 to 8. The Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had warned of a threat from drones approaching Odesa and the surrounding area from the Black Sea. Later, the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarified that the Russian Federation had attacked Ukraine with 176 strike drones overnight, of which Ukraine's air defense managed to neutralize 146.
Furthermore, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) reported that the occupiers once again launched a massive attack on the Odesa region, using Shahed-type drones, which led to damage to port infrastructure. As a result of the strikes, fires broke out in the port area and in warehouse facilities. Firefighters promptly extinguished the flames, preventing further spread of the fire.
These events highlight the alarming situation in the Odesa region, where attacks on energy facilities are becoming increasingly frequent. Local residents continue to suffer from the consequences of the war, while energy companies strive to ensure stable electricity supply amid constant threats. Authorities and energy workers are urging the population to remain vigilant and to follow official safety announcements.
