In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russian occupation forces launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine, deploying 93 strike drones, including Shahed models, during the night of April 4 to 5, 2023. According to information provided by the Ukrainian Air Force, approximately 60 of these drones were Shahed types, indicating an increase in the aggressiveness of Russian forces in Ukraine's airspace.
The attack was executed from various directions, including Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in the Russian Federation, as well as from Gvardeyskoye in the temporarily occupied Crimea. As of 08:00 on April 5, Ukrainian air defense managed to shoot down or suppress 76 enemy drones, marking a significant achievement amid such an intense assault.
Military reports indicated that 17 strike drones hit 10 different locations, with debris from downed drones falling in three areas. This suggests that the attack not only caused damage but also created a dangerous situation for the civilian population.
On the evening of April 4, Russian forces also carried out a missile strike on the Popiv community in the Sumy region, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Additionally, drones attacked Odesa, where vehicles and a residential balcony caught fire in one district. Preliminary reports indicated that this attack also resulted in injuries to two people, as confirmed by Serhiy Lysak, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration.
Serhiy Kryvosheienko, head of the Sumy City Military Administration, noted that a Russian drone struck a parking lot in Sumy, damaging two cars. Fortunately, no one was injured in this strike, but in the same area, a 52-year-old man was injured due to an attack by Molniya-type drones and was urgently hospitalized.
These events underscore the growing threat posed by Russian forces, which continue to utilize drones to attack civilian objects in Ukraine. Experts believe that such actions may signal a new tactic by the Russian army, aiming to destabilize the situation in Ukraine and instill fear among the population. In the context of war, it is crucial for the Ukrainian side to continue strengthening its air defense and take all necessary measures to protect civilians.
Thus, the situation in Ukraine remains tense, and further attacks by Russian occupiers could lead to new casualties among the civilian population. Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and adhere to safety measures, especially in areas of active hostilities.
