Russia Strengthens Air Defense in Crimea, Says Pletenchuk

In a recent television broadcast, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Naval Forces, Dmitry Pletenchuk, revealed that Russia is actively enhancing its air defense systems in Crimea. This ongoing process has raised concerns about the unpredictability of military actions in the region.

In a recent television broadcast, Dmitry Pletenchuk, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Naval Forces, stated that Russia is intensifying its air defense capabilities in Crimea. According to Pletenchuk, this enhancement is a continuous process, and the enemy cannot be 100% certain about what will happen at any given moment. He noted that in most cases, after the destruction of radar surveillance systems, the subsequent targeting of objects that these systems were protecting leads to ongoing explosions across the peninsula.

Pletenchuk emphasized the distinction between targeting air defense systems and the objects they shield. This indicates that the situation in Crimea remains tense, with Russian forces striving to maintain a high level of protection for their strategic assets. The ongoing military activity underscores the precarious nature of security in the region, as both sides remain vigilant.

Furthermore, Pletenchuk highlighted the strategic significance of Crimea for Russia, particularly in terms of airspace control and military logistics. The occupiers are acutely aware of the importance of this peninsula, which is why they are determined to keep it under their control while ensuring a robust defense posture. The focus on Crimea reflects broader military strategies aimed at securing Russian interests in the Black Sea and Azov regions.

“This temporarily occupied peninsula is indeed being defended quite tightly, and it is more likely that they will pull resources here rather than the other way around,” Pletenchuk remarked. He explained that this is influenced by various factors, starting from the so-called sacredness of Crimea, which Russia seeks to uphold, to its strategic importance for controlling airspace over the Azov-Black Sea region.

In addition, Pletenchuk pointed out that Russian troops, infrastructure, and logistics are stationed in Crimea, which play a crucial role in sustaining the southern military grouping. “In any case, they need to pull back somewhere, evacuate the wounded, and accumulate forces and resources, so they are always trying to restore these systems,” he stressed, highlighting the ongoing military preparations in the area.

It is worth noting that earlier reports from Ukrinform indicated that the Ukrainian Naval Forces do not confirm their involvement in incidents involving Russian aircraft, specifically the An-26 and Su-30, in temporarily occupied Crimea. According to representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, these incidents may have been caused by malfunctions or actions taken by the Russian systems themselves.
