Russia Threatens Baltic States with Consequences for Allegedly Allowing Ukrainian Strikes

The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a warning to the Baltic states regarding potential repercussions for allegedly permitting their airspace to be used for Ukrainian strikes on Russian ports in the Baltic Sea.

In a recent statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) cautioned the Baltic states about possible consequences for allegedly granting their airspace to facilitate Ukrainian attacks on Russian ports located in the Baltic Sea. Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian MFA, emphasized that Russia has already issued a warning to these countries regarding the situation.

Zakharova remarked that if the leaders of the Baltic nations possess sufficient wisdom, they should heed these warnings. Otherwise, she asserted, they would face a response from Russia. This statement is part of a broader information campaign being waged in Russian media following incidents where several Ukrainian drones reportedly entered the airspace of the Baltic states while attempting to target Russian ports.

It is important to note that such statements are not new. Recently, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also addressed this issue, confirming that Russia views these actions as unacceptable. Following the initial incidents of Ukrainian drones entering the territories of Latvia and Estonia, rumors began circulating in the Russian information space suggesting that these countries had allegedly granted Ukraine permission to use their airspace.

In response to these accusations, Latvia officially declared that Russia has initiated a disinformation campaign. The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its protest to Moscow, denying any allegations of allowing airspace for Ukrainian strikes. Estonia also firmly refuted the Russian claims, emphasizing that no permission had been granted to Ukraine to use Estonian airspace.

From the Ukrainian side, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued an apology to its partners for the incidents involving the drones, indicating that it is likely these drones strayed off course due to Russian electronic warfare measures. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also expressed the belief that Russia is deliberately misdirecting Ukrainian drones so that they end up in the territories of the Baltic states.

Geographically, the shortest direct route from Ukraine northward to the Russian ports near St. Petersburg passes through the eastern borders of Belarus and over the territories of Latvia and Estonia. This situation raises concerns not only in Ukraine but also among the Baltic nations, which are striving to avoid escalating conflict with Russia. Amid rising tensions in the region, issues of security and airspace have become extremely pertinent.
