Russia Attacks Oil Refinery in Merefa, Kharkiv Region

In the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, the aggressor nation Russia struck an oil refinery situated in Merefa, Kharkiv region, deploying Shahed-type drones. This attack was confirmed by Anastasia Cherednikova, the head of the legal department of the refinery, in a statement to Suspilne.

Cherednikova reported that the facility suffered significant damage due to the assault; however, there were no casualties among the staff. She emphasized that this marks the fifth attack on the oil refinery since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite the inflicted damage, Cherednikova reassured that the refinery would continue its operations, although it remains unclear how long it will take to restore functionality following the bombardment.

Oleg Synegubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, also commented on the situation, noting that the Russian attack in Merefa resulted in damage to four private homes and three vehicles. This indicates that the attack had serious repercussions not only for the enterprise but also for the local residents.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reported that a fire broke out at a civilian facility in Kharkiv region as a result of the Russian drone strike. Firefighters are actively working to extinguish the blaze, which is likely related to the oil refinery in Merefa.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces' Air Force provided additional information, stating that Russian troops attacked Ukraine overnight with 176 strike drones, including types such as Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and others. Ukraine's air defense successfully neutralized 146 Russian drones, demonstrating a high level of readiness and effectiveness of the Ukrainian military in countering aggression.

It is noteworthy that in March 2025, approximately 20 Russian drones also targeted the oil refinery in Merefa, leading to a complete shutdown of the facility. This raises concerns regarding the safety and stability of the refinery's operations amid ongoing assaults from the aggressor.

The oil refinery in Merefa is owned by the Kharkiv Investment and Industrial Group AES Group and is the largest mini-refinery in Ukraine. Its significance for the economy of the region and the country as a whole is hard to overstate, making such attacks a threat not only to production but also to the energy security of the state.
