Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Comments on US Vice President's Statement Regarding Ukrainian Interference in Hungarian Elections

On April 8, during a briefing, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tikhiy addressed recent comments made by US Vice President JD Vance concerning alleged interference by Ukrainian intelligence services in the upcoming Hungarian elections.

During a briefing held on April 8, Georgiy Tikhiy, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, commented on a recent statement made by US Vice President JD Vance. Vance, during a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, expressed concerns about potential interference by Ukrainian intelligence services in the elections scheduled for April 12 in Hungary.

Tikhiy noted that Ukraine does not "exaggerate" the significance of this statement. According to him, during the press conference with Vance, there were journalists who "systematically tried to provoke" the US Vice President into making sharp remarks. Tikhiy emphasized that Vance, in turn, almost always "responded neutrally," indicating his caution in wording.

"Honestly, we do not exaggerate the importance of this statement. I urge you to watch the entire press conference; then it will be clear what the US Vice President's attitude is, rather than drawing conclusions based on that small fragment," Tikhiy stressed. He also added that there are no separate communications with American partners regarding alleged interference in the elections.

It is worth recalling that on April 7, during a press conference, JD Vance stated that "there are elements within Ukrainian intelligence services attempting to influence the outcomes of American and Hungarian elections." This statement has generated significant media attention and sparked reactions among politicians, as it pertains to crucial elections that could affect the political landscape in Hungary.

Vance arrived in Hungary to support Prime Minister Orban just days before the parliamentary elections. These elections could prove decisive for the future of Hungarian politics, as Orban seeks to maintain his position amid rising opposition. Notably, there is tension in Hungary between the government and opposition forces, who accuse Orban of authoritarian governance methods.

The Vice President's statement underscores the importance of the international context in contemporary elections, as countries like Ukraine can become entangled in political games that extend beyond their national interests. In an era of globalization and increasing interdependence among states, the question of potential election interference is becoming increasingly relevant.

Thus, Tikhiy's comments may reflect Ukraine's desire to avoid escalating tensions with the United States, as well as a commitment to maintaining stable relations with the Hungarian government, despite the complex political situation in the region.
