Ukraine's Proposal for Easter Ceasefire Remains Valid — Volodymyr Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reaffirmed that the country's proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains on the table, emphasizing the need for dialogue amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the country's proposal for a ceasefire during Easter in the war initiated by Russia remains valid. This statement was made during a press conference where Zelensky addressed questions regarding the potential for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine has sent a request to the United States regarding the Easter ceasefire; however, it remains unclear whether American partners will be able to convey this message to the Russian side. He stated, “We have all seen in the media their response: they (the Russians) seem not to be ready for this. I don’t know how serious this response is. We have passed our request to the American side. I do not know if they will have the opportunity to convey their message to the 'Russians'. We will see,” the president remarked.
On March 30, while commenting on the ceasefire issue, Zelensky expressed readiness for any format of peaceful resolution, particularly during Easter. “We are ready to talk; you remember, about any ceasefire. A complete ceasefire. An energy ceasefire. Ceasefire for food security and energy, meaning both sea and sky. Completely — so that no rockets or drones fly. Do not strike at infrastructure. We have proposed all this. And we are open. If the 'Russians' are ready — please, we are ready. Let them propose any time — we are ready to resolve this issue,” said the Ukrainian president.
On March 31, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on President Zelensky's proposal for an Easter ceasefire, stating that Russia “did not see a clearly formulated initiative.” The Kremlin traditionally rejected the ceasefire and noted that Zelensky “must take responsibility and make the appropriate decisions for us to reach peace, rather than a truce.”
This situation underscores the complexity of the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia, especially in the context of the ongoing war that began in 2014. Ukraine's proposal for a ceasefire during Easter represents an attempt to find a compromise during this significant religious period; however, the Kremlin's response indicates that the willingness to engage in dialogue from the Russian side remains in question.
It is important to note that Easter is not only a holiday for Christians but also a symbol of hope for peace and restoration. The Ukrainian side continues to seek opportunities to achieve peace despite the challenging circumstances. Meanwhile, the international community is closely monitoring the developments and hopes for positive changes in the current situation.
