UNDP Supports Clearing Over One Million Tons of Debris in Ukraine, Says Regional Bureau Director
Active efforts to clear debris in Ukraine are ongoing, with significant contributions from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In an interview with Ukrinform, Ivana Zhivkovich, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, highlighted the importance of debris removal in the country’s post-conflict recovery.
In Ukraine, the active work of clearing debris continues, with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) playing a significant role in this process. Ivana Zhivkovich, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, shared insights during an interview with Ukrinform, noting that debris removal has become one of the key challenges the country faces in its recovery efforts following the conflict.
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2022, UNDP has supported the clearing of over one million tons of debris across various regions. These efforts have enabled local communities to regain access to public spaces and initiate the reconstruction of thousands of damaged facilities. According to Zhivkovich, this represents a crucial step in restoring normal life in areas affected by the war.
Zhivkovich also emphasized that UNDP has introduced the first protocol in Ukraine for the safe handling of hazardous materials. This has been an important advancement in ensuring safety during the debris removal process. Additionally, the organization has supported the adoption of new state sanitary standards, which will enhance working conditions in this field.
As part of its initiatives, UNDP is preparing to launch the first laboratory in Ukraine for asbestos testing. This facility will allow for more effective identification of hazardous materials and reduce health risks for individuals involved in the recovery processes.
Furthermore, the international organization is actively working on expanding recycling capabilities for construction waste through local centers. This initiative promotes the transformation of waste into reusable secondary materials. Such measures not only reduce environmental impact but also help lower reconstruction costs, which is particularly important in the current circumstances.
As reported by Ukrinform, on April 1, the Ministry of Community Development and Territories, in collaboration with UNDP, agreed on a Roadmap for Cooperation for 2026. This roadmap aims at systematic recovery of territories and strengthening the capacity of local self-governance, which is critical for ensuring stability and development in Ukraine.
Thus, UNDP's efforts in debris clearing and support for recovery in Ukraine continue to gain momentum, underscoring the importance of international assistance during this challenging period for the country. The organization remains at the forefront of the fight for restoration and rebuilding, which is essential for the future prosperity of Ukrainian communities.
