Lithuanian President Calls for Alternatives to the Ruling Coalition

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has urged the search for alternatives to the current ruling coalition after the far-right party 'Zorya Nimanu' voted against a bill regarding the construction of a military training ground in Kapčiamiestis.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called for the exploration of alternatives to the ruling coalition, following a controversial vote by the far-right party 'Zorya Nimanu' against a crucial bill concerning the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamiestis. This presidential call came in the wake of last week's vote, where seven members of 'Zorya Nimanu' opposed the initiative, raising concerns among their coalition partners.

President Nausėda emphasized that the voting situation highlights significant value discrepancies between the parties within the coalition. "I have often stated that I find it difficult to understand a coalition that is guided by differing values, and in this case, we are indeed talking about a value that is extremely important for us, for the survival of our people, namely the security of our state," the president remarked. He further added that when one of the coalition parties votes against critical initiatives, it raises questions about the viability of continued cooperation.

The Lithuanian president stressed that he sees no reason to delay a decision regarding a change in coalition partners. "These alternatives existed before, these alternatives were very recent, these alternatives exist now and will be in the future," he underscored. Nausėda believes that previous potential options were not considered for various reasons, but now is the time to seriously evaluate all possibilities and make appropriate decisions.

It is worth noting that Lithuania's Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene assured in January of this year that the ruling coalition continues to exist until her social-democratic party makes a different decision. However, President Gitanas Nausėda expressed doubts about whether the current coalition could last until the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2028. These statements reflect the growing tension in Lithuania's political environment, where issues of security and stability are becoming increasingly pressing.

Importantly, the vote against the bill for the construction of a military training ground in Kapčiamiestis has sparked not only political resonance but also outrage among experts and the public, who believe that national security should be the top priority. In this context, the president's call to seek new coalition partners could be a significant step towards strengthening political stability and ensuring national security.
