Damaged School and Over 100 Homes: Aftermath of Russian Strikes on Balabyn in Zaporizhzhia
In Balabyn, Zaporizhzhia, the community continues to grapple with the devastating consequences of relentless Russian military attacks that have persisted for three consecutive days, causing significant destruction.
In Balabyn, located in the Zaporizhzhia region, the aftermath of brutal attacks by Russian forces is being felt deeply as the community endures a third consecutive day of bombardment, resulting in extensive damage. According to a correspondent from Ukrinform, one of the shells struck the schoolyard, creating a massive crater just a few meters away from the educational institution.
The school's principal, Zhanna Vynnychenko, shared in a phone comment that the shockwave from the explosion damaged the school building. Windows were shattered, and furniture was destroyed; however, fortunately, no staff members were harmed. She also noted that the educational process continues in an underground school built nearby, which has remained unscathed. Today, despite the ongoing shelling, children returned to classes.
The attacks on the Balabyn community have continued for three consecutive days. Vladimir Sosunovskyi, head of the Kushuhum community, reported that Russian military forces are launching strikes using multiple rocket launch systems (MRLS) and dropping guided aerial bombs (GABs). In his address, he mentioned that the community is currently assessing the situation and the extent of the damage incurred.
“Yesterday, approximately 80 houses were damaged, and today the same number,” emphasized Sosunovskyi, pointing out that the destruction is ongoing, and the number of casualties from the shelling is rising. Reports indicate that this morning, Russian forces carried out at least eight strikes on Balabyn, resulting in four injuries and one fatality.
These events unfold against the backdrop of escalating conflict in the region, where Russian troops continue their aggression against Ukraine. Local residents are suffering from constant bombardments that are damaging not only infrastructure but also endangering lives. The community is striving to adapt to new conditions; however, the persistent threat and fear for their lives leave deep scars on the souls of the inhabitants.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and adhere to safety measures, as the situation remains tense. Meanwhile, local organizations and volunteers are working to provide assistance to those affected, organizing humanitarian initiatives and fundraising efforts to rebuild destroyed homes and support individuals who have lost their residences.
The situation in Balabyn serves as a stark example of how war impacts the lives of ordinary people who are forced to live under constant threat. Despite the hardships, the community continues to fight for its right to a peaceful life and recovery.
