At the age of 80, the distinguished Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu has passed away, leaving an indelible mark on world football, particularly in Ukraine, where his career was closely associated with clubs such as Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv. His contribution to the development of Ukrainian football is hard to overestimate, as under his leadership, the Donetsk club reached unprecedented heights.

Mircea Lucescu, who worked with Shakhtar Donetsk, achieved significant success, becoming an eight-time champion of Ukraine. However, his greatest achievement was winning the UEFA Cup, which became a historic moment for Ukrainian football. This victory not only elevated the prestige of the club but also opened new horizons for Ukrainian players on the international stage.

After his successful tenure with Shakhtar, Lucescu also took charge of Dynamo Kyiv, where he also won the title of champion of Ukraine. Unfortunately, his career in Ukraine came to an end after the full-scale Russian invasion, when he was forced to leave a country that had become his second homeland.

Mircea Lucescu's personal life also deserves attention. His wife, Neli, with whom he lived for nearly 60 years, may have helped him adapt more easily to life in Ukraine. It is known that her mother and grandmother came from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in the Odesa region, suggesting possible Ukrainian roots for Neli. However, whether there is indeed Ukrainian blood in her veins remains unknown, as her family lived in a region that was part of Romania at the time.

Mircea and Neli met in a student cafeteria, and their first encounter occurred on a tram, where Mircea offered to help the girl carry her bag. Since then, they became inseparable. They have a son, Rezvan, who also became a well-known football coach, as well as two grandchildren, Matei and Maria-Luiza, and a great-granddaughter, Zoya.

In his interviews, Lucescu repeatedly emphasized the importance of family in his life. "I knew how important it was to start a family as early as possible. I was quite selfish because I did it to support my work and football. Family always gives a sense of security; family supports you in difficult times. When you are successful, the price of success is envy, and the price of failure is loneliness. When you have problems, when you are upset, family helps you. You need to find balance in all of this, and family gives you that balance," he said in an interview with Antena Stars.

Mircea Lucescu leaves behind a vast legacy that will be remembered not only by his students but by all who love football. His contribution to the development of Ukrainian football, as well as his personal qualities such as dedication, hard work, and the ability to inspire, will remain in the memory of many generations.
