Hakan Çalhanoğlu, a prominent midfielder for the Italian football club Inter Milan and the Turkish national team, has publicly mourned the passing of the legendary coach Mircea Lucescu. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Çalhanoğlu shared a moving photograph of himself embracing Lucescu, expressing his deep condolences and emphasizing that the football community has lost not only a coach but also an extraordinary individual.
Mircea Lucescu served as the head coach of the Turkish national team from 2017 to 2019, during which time he made significant contributions to the development of the team. Çalhanoğlu reflected on Lucescu's impact on his career, stating, "We have lost not just a head coach, but a great personality. You invested so much in me, and I will always remember you with respect and gratitude. Rest in peace, teacher." This statement underscores the profound influence Lucescu had on his players.
Lucescu, a Romanian coach who gained fame in Ukraine, managed the Donetsk football club Shakhtar Donetsk from 2004 to 2016. Under his leadership, the team played 573 matches and secured 22 trophies, including eight Ukrainian championship titles, six Ukrainian Cups, and seven Ukrainian Super Cups. Notably, he also led the club to its first European trophy, the UEFA Cup, in 2009. Following his tenure at Shakhtar, Lucescu won the Ukrainian Premier League title with Dynamo Kyiv in the 2020/21 season. His remarkable achievements place him among the top three most successful coaches in football history, highlighting his enormous contribution to the development of Ukrainian football.
On March 29, 2026, following Romania's defeat to Turkey (0-1) in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualification, Lucescu was hospitalized due to a deterioration in his health. On April 2, he stepped down as the head coach of the Romanian national team, a move that shocked many fans.
Tragically, on April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction while in the hospital. Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma due to severe arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment. A subsequent CT scan revealed multiple signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism, with his condition classified as critical. Cardiologist Ştefan Buşnatu reported damage to several organs, including the heart, brain, and lungs. Unfortunately, on April 7, Mircea Lucescu passed away, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the world of football.
Earlier, Oleksandr Kuchер also reminisced about his acquaintance with Mircea Lucescu in Donetsk, emphasizing how significant this coach was for many players and football specialists. The memories of Mircea Lucescu will remain in the hearts of many, as he was not only a coach but also a person who inspired and believed in his protégés. His contributions to football will be remembered by generations to come.
