Tragic news has emerged from the world of football: at the age of 80, the renowned Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu has passed away, leaving a significant mark in the history of Donetsk Shakhtar. This loss is a heavy blow not only for the club but for the entire Ukrainian football community, as Lucescu became an iconic figure for many fans.

During his career at Shakhtar, which lasted from 2004 to 2016, Lucescu achieved remarkable success. He became Ukrainian champion eight times, won the Ukrainian Cup six times, and claimed the Ukrainian Supercup seven times. His most memorable achievement came in 2009 when he led the team to victory in the UEFA Cup, defeating German side Werder Bremen 2-1 after extra time, marking a significant milestone for Ukrainian football.

In 2015, Shakhtar announced plans to erect a monument in honor of Mircea Lucescu for his 70th birthday. The monument was designed by Ukrainian sculptor Igor Gluhenkiy, a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine. A miniature version of the statue was presented on the coach's birthday, while the full-scale version was planned to be installed near the Donbass Arena after the team returned to their home city of Donetsk.

The bronze figure, which was kept at Shakhtar's training base in Kyiv, was set to be ceremoniously unveiled in 2020 to celebrate Lucescu's 75th anniversary. However, plans changed when the Romanian specialist accepted an offer to lead Kyiv's Dynamo. As a result, on Lucescu's 80th birthday, Shakhtar decided to send the sculpture to his native Romania to honor the coach's memory.

Interestingly, it was previously reported that Mircea Lucescu's mother-in-law was from Ukraine, which added even more connections between him and Ukrainian football. By the end of his career, Lucescu ranked among the top three coaches in the world in terms of trophies won, underscoring his immense contribution to the development of football.

The memory of Mircea Lucescu will remain in the hearts of many fans who will remember him as one of the greatest coaches in the history of Ukrainian football. His successes, achievements, and influence on the development of Shakhtar and Ukrainian football as a whole will forever be etched in the memories of generations.
