On March 29, 2026, Lucescu was hospitalized after feeling unwell during a training session with the Romanian national team, following a disappointing 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the World Cup 2026 qualifying playoffs. On April 2, he announced his resignation as the head coach of the Romanian team, a decision that shocked many of his supporters.

While in the hospital on April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction.
