Former Dynamo and Shakhtar Coach Mircea Lucescu Passes Away

On April 7, Mircea Lucescu, a legendary figure in Ukrainian football, died at the age of 80. His passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, as Lucescu had been a prominent and influential presence in Ukrainian sports for many years.
Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29, 2023, after his health deteriorated sharply during the Romanian national team's training camp. This decline followed a disappointing 0-1 loss to Turkey in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. On April 2, after much contemplation, Lucescu made the difficult decision to resign as head coach of the Romanian national team, marking a significant turning point in his illustrious career.
Tragically, on April 3, doctors discovered that Lucescu had suffered an acute myocardial infarction while in the hospital. Subsequently, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias that were resistant to treatment. Further examinations, including a CT scan, revealed multiple signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism. Cardiologist Stefan Busnatu, who conducted the assessments, noted that several organs—including the heart, brain, and lungs—were affected, significantly increasing the risks to Lucescu's life.
Mircea Lucescu left an indelible mark on Ukrainian football during his 15 years in the country, managing prominent clubs such as Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. With Shakhtar, he won the Ukrainian championship eight times and famously lifted the UEFA Cup in 2009. His tenure with Dynamo saw him secure the Ukrainian Premier League title in the 2020/21 season, which was a notable achievement in his career.
In the 2016/17 season, Lucescu took the reins of the Russian club Zenit, but his heart always remained in Ukraine. He often spoke fondly of his home in Donetsk, which he was forced to leave due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
