Polish F-16s Intercept Russian Reconnaissance Aircraft Over the Baltic Sea

According to the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces on social media platform X, a pair of F-16 fighter jets successfully intercepted, visually identified, and escorted a Russian aircraft that was engaged in a reconnaissance mission.

The intercepted aircraft was of the Il-20 type and notably did not file a flight plan, nor did it have its transponder activated. This lack of compliance with international regulations governing air transport indicates that the aircraft was not adhering to established protocols. However, the Operational Command emphasized that there was no violation of Polish airspace, which is a crucial aspect of this situation.

Military officials stated that the interception of aircraft is not a display of power but rather one of the primary tools for ensuring control over the country's airspace. This event is not isolated. As reported by Ukrinform, earlier on March 13, a pair of Polish MiG-29 fighters also intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea area. This indicates the ongoing activity of the Polish Air Force in ensuring the security of airspace in the region, especially in the context of rising tensions between Russia and NATO countries.
