Poland's President Karol Nawrocki has signed a significant decree that will see the involvement of military units in border operations alongside the country's border guards with Lithuania and Germany. This decision comes in response to increasing security challenges at the national border. According to the Bureau of National Security of Poland, the military will be engaged in securing the border from April 5, 2026, to October 1, 2026.

Under the decree, Polish military personnel will participate in ensuring safety in border areas, marking an important step in the fight against illegal migration and smuggling. It is noteworthy that since July 2025, Polish border guards have been involved in an operation called 'Safe West,' aimed at enhancing security in the border zone with Germany. This operation is focused on countering illegal migration, human trafficking, and unlawful border crossings.

Additionally, in 2024, an operation named 'Safe Podlasie' was launched at the border with Lithuania, which also aims to address migration pressure from Belarus. These measures reflect the seriousness of the situation and the necessity for active steps to ensure the security of the state.

It is important to recall that last week, Poland decided to extend temporary border controls with Lithuania and Germany for an additional six months. This decision was made in light of rising tensions in the region and the need to monitor the situation at borders that are strategically important for the country. Furthermore, at the beginning of March, Poland extended the implementation of the 'buffer zone' decision along the border with Belarus for another three months. This zone was established for enhanced security control, underscoring the seriousness of threats that may arise from the neighboring country.

Thus, the involvement of the army in securing the borders with Lithuania and Germany is part of Poland's comprehensive approach to ensuring national security. This decision highlights the importance of cooperation among various government structures in combating modern challenges such as illegal migration and smuggling. Poland continues to actively work on strengthening its borders and ensuring the safety of its citizens, responding to the challenges posed by global changes.
