NASA's Orion Spacecraft Has Passed More Than Halfway to the Moon
The American spacecraft Orion, part of the Artemis II mission, has successfully traveled over half the distance from Earth to the Moon, according to NASA officials.
The American spacecraft Orion, which is carrying out the Artemis II mission, has successfully traversed more than half the distance from Earth to the Moon. This significant update was shared by representatives from NASA, highlighting that the crew is now closer to the Moon than to our planet.
On Saturday, members of the Artemis II mission shared news via the social media platform Facebook, stating: "Our NASA Artemis II crew is now closer to the Moon than to Earth." This indicates that the mission is proceeding as planned, and the astronauts continue to carry out their tasks.
According to NASA's report, the Artemis II crew began preparing the cabin of the Orion spacecraft for lunar observation on Monday, April 6, at approximately 2:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time. Crew members actively engaged in training, practicing medical response procedures, and testing the spacecraft's emergency communication systems in deep space conditions.
The Artemis II crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen, an astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The Orion spacecraft is scheduled to perform a lunar flyby on the sixth day of its flight, which is a crucial milestone for this mission.
The launch of the spacecraft took place using the heavy-lift Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday at 6:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time, corresponding to 4:35 AM Kyiv time on Thursday.
As part of the Artemis II mission, the Orion spacecraft plans to make a single orbit around the Moon. It is expected to fly within 7,500 kilometers of the surface of our lunar companion before returning to Earth, with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. The total duration of the flight will be 10 days, which is part of NASA's ambitious program aimed at returning humans to the Moon and further exploring space.
