Victory in the Sommelier Competition: Who Became the Best in 2023
On April 6, 2023, the prestigious sommelier competition organized by the Association of Sommeliers of Ukraine concluded in Kyiv, showcasing the finest talents in the wine and gastronomy sector.
On April 6, 2023, in one of the elegant halls of the Hilton Hotel in Kyiv, the final of the prestigious competition held annually by the Association of Sommeliers of Ukraine took place. This event attracts not only professionals but also enthusiasts of gastronomy and wine culture, as it determines the best representatives of the sommelier profession in Ukraine.
Prior to the final, on April 5, a semi-final was held, featuring twelve talented sommeliers from various regions of the country. The competition was intense and exciting, as participants demonstrated their skills, knowledge, and abilities in customer service, beverage pairing, and gastronomic accompaniment. Traditionally, three of the best sommeliers made it to the final: Yevhen Oliynyk, a sommelier at La Luce restaurant; Bohdan Palyukh, the head sommelier of the same restaurant; and Dmytro Lazorka, a sommelier at the Marimo restaurant. All finalists are residents of Lviv, highlighting the high level of professionalism in this city.
The sommelier profession, derived from the French word 'sommelier', is an essential component of the gastronomic industry. Sommeliers work in food establishments where they not only organize the selection, purchase, and storage of alcoholic beverages but also directly serve guests, offering a variety of drinks, including wine, beer, and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. One of the key tasks of a sommelier is also to pair drinks with the dishes served in the restaurant. Interestingly, the profession of sommelier is often confused with that of a barista, who works in shops and has similar training, but their responsibilities and work environments are significantly different.
Competitions among sommeliers reflect the specifics of their profession, and each year the tasks change; however, the core elements remain unchanged. Participants in the competition go through various stages, including customer service, wine list verification, and blind alcohol tasting, which allows for the assessment of their knowledge and skills in practice.
The Association of Sommeliers of Ukraine is a member of the International Sommelier Association (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, ASI), which is the largest non-profit organization in the world dedicated to this profession. It is important to note that due to quarantine restrictions, the 'Best Sommelier of Ukraine' competition did not take place in 2020, and in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the competitions were canceled due to the war in Ukraine. This underscores the importance of reviving such events for the development of wine culture and the sommelier profession in Ukraine.
Thus, winning the sommelier competition not only marks the personal achievements of the participants but also contributes to the popularization of the profession, the raising of service standards, and the development of gastronomic culture in Ukraine. The sommelier profession is becoming increasingly in demand, and competitions like this help identify the best specialists capable of elevating the level of service in restaurants and other food establishments.
