Pope Calls on Zelensky Amid Escalation of Russian Strikes Ahead of Easter
As Ukraine prepares to celebrate Easter, a significant religious holiday observed by millions, the nation faces intensified Russian strikes that have claimed 14 lives across the country.
In Ukraine, where preparations are underway for Easter—a crucial religious celebration for millions—rather than the anticipated ceasefire or a symbolic pause in hostilities, Russian strikes have escalated. On Friday, these attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives nationwide, underscoring the grim reality faced by civilians during one of the most important holidays of the year.
Recently, Russia has intensified its daytime airstrikes after several months during which most major attacks were conducted at night. These strikes have targeted multiple regions, inflicting damage on residential areas, transportation networks, and critical services, subjecting civilians to prolonged bombardments during this sacred season.
Pope Leo XIV, during the Easter period, reaffirmed his solidarity with the Ukrainian people. In a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Vatican reported that the Pope emphasized the urgency of providing humanitarian assistance to those suffering from the conflict. He also spoke about efforts to secure the release of prisoners and expressed hope that the international community would work towards a ceasefire and achieve lasting peace.
Following their conversation, Zelensky took to platform X to report that Russian forces had launched a wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, even as they spoke. He noted that at least five regions were affected during the ongoing assault that began the previous evening, labeling it an 'Easter escalation' and a direct rejection of Ukraine's proposal for a holiday ceasefire.
'Not a single hour of peace for our people, and this is Russia's response to our proposal for an Easter ceasefire,' Zelensky wrote, highlighting the stark contrast between the intentions of Ukraine and the actions of Russia.
It is important to note that while the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate, the international community is also paying attention to other conflicts. For instance, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle Eastern conflict, while the Kremlin has raised concerns about security risks in the Black Sea region.
President Zelensky mentioned that he and the Pope also discussed the negotiation process and Ukraine's collaboration with American partners. These discussions underscore the significance of international support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing military conflict with Russia, highlighting the need for unity and assistance as the nation endures relentless aggression.
