Pope Francis Calls US-Iran Ceasefire a 'Sign of Living Hope'

During a meeting with pilgrims on Wednesday, Pope Francis expressed his satisfaction with the announcement of an immediate two-week ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran, describing it as a 'sign of living hope' amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and around the world.

Pope Francis, during a meeting with pilgrims held on Wednesday, expressed his satisfaction with the announcement of an immediate two-week ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran. According to the Ukrinform agency, the pontiff characterized this decision as a 'sign of living hope,' especially considering the recent hours of heightened tension in the Middle East and globally.

The Holy Father emphasized that peace is only achievable through a return to the negotiation process. He called on everyone to accompany this period of delicate diplomatic work with prayer, expressing hope that the willingness to engage in dialogue would serve as a means to resolve other conflicts existing in the world.

Pope Francis also reiterated his invitation to participate in a Prayer Vigil scheduled for Saturday. 'I renew the invitation to all to join me in the Prayer Vigil for peace, which we will hold here at St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday, April 11,' he stated.

It is important to note that the United States, Israel, and Iran have reached an agreement for a two-week mutual ceasefire, as well as the reopening of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision marks a significant step towards de-escalating tensions in a region where conflicts have persisted for an extended period.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pointed out that this ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, despite claims from Pakistani mediators asserting otherwise. This indicates that the situation in the region remains complex and requires further attention from the international community.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also expressed concern, stating that the United States would strike if Iran attempts to use the ceasefire to regroup its forces. This underscores that even during the announced peace, tensions between the countries remain high.

Despite the declared ceasefire, Iran launched drone attacks on two cities in Bahrain on April 8. The Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Bahrain reported that civil defense teams managed to control a fire that broke out at a facility targeted by the Iranian attack. This incident highlights that the situation in the region remains extremely tense, and the risks of conflict escalation still exist.

In light of these events, it is crucial for the international community to continue actively working towards a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the Middle East, as stability in this region is significant not only for its inhabitants but for the entire world.
