In Memory of Mircea Lucescu: Oleksandr Kucher's Remembrance of His First Meeting with the Legendary Coach
Former defender of the Donetsk football club Shakhtar, Oleksandr Kucher, shared his first impressions of the legendary coach Mircea Lucescu, who passed away on April 7, 2023, at the age of 80.
Oleksandr Kucher, a former defender for the Donetsk football club Shakhtar, recounted his initial encounter with the legendary coach Mircea Lucescu, who left this world on April 7, 2023, at the age of 80. In a recent interview with Sport.ua, the ex-footballer reflected on their first meeting at the club's training base in Donetsk back in 2006, a pivotal moment as Kucher was just beginning his career with Shakhtar.
Kucher noted that their first encounter occurred when he arrived at the team's facility for a medical examination. At that time, his contract had not yet been signed, and the medical staff was merely assessing his health. As Kucher descended from the third floor of the training base to the second, he came across Mircea Lucescu. 'We greeted each other and had a conversation. He told me what position he envisioned for me on the field and expressed that he was looking forward to having me on the team. Lucescu made a very positive impression on me at that time,' Kucher reminisced.
Mircea Lucescu managed Shakhtar Donetsk from 2004 to 2016, during which time the team played 573 matches under his leadership. The Romanian coach secured an impressive 22 trophies, including eight Ukrainian championship titles, six Ukrainian Cups, and seven Ukrainian Super Cups. One of his most significant achievements was winning the UEFA Cup in 2009, marking the club's first European trophy. After returning to Ukraine in the 2020/21 season, Lucescu led Kyiv's Dynamo to a league title, further solidifying his status as one of the most successful coaches in football history.
Oleksandr Kucher joined Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2006, transferring from Kharkiv's Metalist, and spent 11 years with the club. During his tenure, he became an integral part of the team, which, under Lucescu's guidance, amassed numerous trophies and left a lasting mark on the history of Ukrainian football.
It is worth noting that recently, Shakhtar legend Dario Srna also spoke about the passing of Mircea Lucescu, emotionally recalling his contributions to the development of the club and Ukrainian football as a whole. The death of such a prominent coach as Lucescu represents a significant loss not only for Shakhtar but for all of Ukrainian sports.
