Under his guidance, the team won 22 trophies, including 8 Ukrainian championship titles, 6 Ukrainian Cups, and 7 Ukrainian Super Cups. The most significant achievement was winning the UEFA Cup in 2009, which marked the club's first European trophy.
“FC Shakhtar expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Mircea Lucescu — his wife Nelly, son Rezvan, grandchildren Meril and Matey, his close ones and friends, and all who knew and valued Mister. The coach was hospitalized on March 29, 2023, after falling ill during the Romanian national team's training camp following a loss to Turkey in the World Cup 2026 qualifying playoffs. On April 2, he stepped down from his position as the Romanian team's coach, and on April 3, he suffered an acute myocardial infarction in the hospital. Following this, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias.
During a CT scan, Lucescu was found to have multiple signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism, and his condition was assessed as critical.
