Orban Promises to Overcome Ukraine's 'Oil Blockade' if He Wins Elections

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made a significant statement, asserting that if his political party Fidesz wins the elections scheduled for April 12, he will implement a plan to compel Ukraine to resume the supply of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made a significant statement regarding his plans for energy supply in the region. During a joint press conference with U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance, who visited Hungary to express support for Orban ahead of the elections, the Prime Minister emphasized that if his political party, Fidesz, secures victory in the upcoming elections on April 12, he will be able to execute a strategy aimed at compelling Ukraine to restore the flow of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.

At the press conference, Orban highlighted his government's commitment to ensuring that the Hungarian economy and consumers have access to fuel and energy. He stressed the necessity of pressuring the Ukrainian side to reactivate the Druzhba pipeline, which is crucial for the supply of Russian oil to Hungary. 'We have a plan on how to achieve this. We are actually implementing it step by step, and I am convinced that at the end of this process, after the victory of national forces in the elections here in Hungary, the Ukrainians will have no choice but to lift this blockade, reopen the pipeline, and Hungary will be able to return to normal functioning,' Orban stated.

Furthermore, he expressed the belief that Ukraine is deliberately delaying the resumption of oil supplies through Druzhba in order to bring a pro-Ukrainian government to power in the elections on April 12. This statement has created some tension in Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, as the issue of energy supply has always been sensitive and significant for both countries.

It is worth noting that on March 19, Viktor Orban had already indicated that Budapest would not unblock any decisions that could benefit Ukraine until Kyiv resumes the supply of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. This reaffirms that the question of energy security and oil supply remains at the forefront of the Hungarian government's agenda, especially in the context of the upcoming elections.

The situation surrounding oil supplies through Druzhba is a critical element in the relationship between Ukraine and Hungary. On one hand, Ukraine is striving to diversify its energy supplies and reduce its dependence on Russian energy sources; on the other hand, Hungary, which has traditionally received a significant portion of its oil from Russia, is eager to return to its usual supply routes. This creates tension in the relations between the two countries, which already face a number of other issues related to the political situation in the region.

Thus, the elections in Hungary could prove decisive for the future development of relations between Kyiv and Budapest, as well as for energy security in Central and Eastern Europe. Observers believe that the election results could significantly impact the political landscape of the region and the energy policies of countries dependent on Russian supplies.
