OpenAI Proposes New Initiatives for Societal Adaptation to Artificial Intelligence Development

The company has introduced a series of initiatives, including the implementation of taxes on automated labor and the establishment of a government fund designed to distribute profits from the AI economy among citizens. These measures are intended to mitigate the negative impacts of automation on the job market and ensure social equity.

In a document titled "Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age: Ideas to Keep People First," OpenAI outlines potential changes that could assist society in addressing the challenges posed by the influence of artificial intelligence on the economy and social structure. One of the key proposals includes the introduction of a four-day workweek, which could reduce stress and enhance employee productivity. Furthermore, OpenAI advocates for investments in electrical grids and strengthening social protections for those who may be adversely affected by automation.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has previously noted that the emergence of systems capable of surpassing human capabilities will transform the world in a manner akin to the Industrial Revolution. The new document emphasizes that no one can predict precisely how this transition will unfold, making it crucial to prepare for various scenarios. OpenAI also underscores the importance of engaging citizens in democratic processes to enable them to influence the future of artificial intelligence.

Among the pivotal ideas proposed by OpenAI is the creation of a government fund that would invest in long-term assets related to the development of artificial intelligence. The profits generated from this fund are intended to be distributed among citizens, thereby reducing inequality within society. The company also suggests reforming the tax system to impose higher taxes on corporate profits and capital while lowering taxes on labor income. President Donald Trump previously signed an executive order limiting regional regulations for AI, citing national and economic security concerns. Concurrently, Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are working on initiatives that propose a temporary ban on the construction of new AI data centers until appropriate legislation is enacted.

OpenAI has also announced that it will be accepting feedback on its ideas and plans to hold discussions at the upcoming OpenAI Workshop, scheduled for May in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the company intends to launch scholarships and research grants of up to $100,000, as well as provide up to $1 million in API credits for projects related to these proposals.
