Eleven-Year-Old Unbroken Patient to Participate in Boston Marathon

The Lviv City Council has announced that 11-year-old Roman Oleksiv, a patient at the Unbroken center, will participate in the Boston Marathon. This year, the boy will run a 5-kilometer distance as part of an annual initiative organized in collaboration with the One World Strong Foundation.

The primary goal of the run is to raise funds for the purchase of surgical instruments for the burn unit of the St. Nicholas Children's Hospital in Lviv.

Roman Oleksiv has been on a long recovery journey for three years following a horrific missile attack in his hometown of Vinnytsia, which claimed the life of his mother when he was just seven years old. After the tragedy, the boy sustained severe burns that required numerous medical interventions. To date, he has undergone 36 surgeries, and his treatment continues. Despite all the challenges, Roman leads an active life: he attends school, studies foreign languages, participates in swimming, music, and dance, and is preparing for his first race.

As part of his marathon preparation, Roman, together with Unbroken Ukraine, the Unbroken Foundation, and the dobro.ua platform, is launching a charity fundraiser. The main goal of this fundraiser is to collect 200,000 hryvnias, which will be used to purchase the necessary surgical instruments for the burn unit of the St. Nicholas Children's Hospital in Lviv. This initiative aims not only to help other children in need of medical assistance but also to support Roman in his personal struggle for recovery.

It is worth noting that Roman Oleksiv, who has become a symbol of resilience and courage, received the international Cinema for Peace award for his extraordinary story and contribution to charity. His participation in the Boston Marathon is yet another step on his path to recovery and helping others who have experienced similar tragedies.

This marathon, which takes place in Boston, has attracted participants from around the world for many years, and its goals extend far beyond athletic achievements. The runs organized as part of the marathon often aim to support charitable initiatives, and Roman's involvement is no exception. His story inspires many, and he hopes that his participation in the marathon will draw attention to the plight of children affected by war.
