National Bank Releases 'Pysanka' Coin Featuring Designs from Four Ukrainian Regions

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has announced the issuance of a new commemorative coin titled 'Easter Joy. Pysanka,' celebrating the ancient tradition of egg painting in the Polissia region. This initiative highlights the importance of Ukraine's cultural heritage.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has officially introduced a new commemorative coin named 'Easter Joy. Pysanka,' dedicated to the long-standing tradition of egg decoration in the Polissia region. This announcement was made on the regulator's official website, emphasizing the significance of Ukraine's cultural heritage.

The design of the new coin captures characteristic elements of the traditions from one of Ukraine's oldest ethnographic regions, Polissia. Each element of the ornamentation carries profound symbolic meaning. For instance, the sun and star symbolize life-giving energy, waves reflect water and fertility, while spirals represent infinity. Such details point to the deep roots of Ukrainian folk traditions and their connection to nature.

According to information provided by the central bank, the new silver coin has a denomination of 10 hryvnias and is crafted in an oval shape. The reverse side of the coin is adorned with the 'ruzha' (star) ornament, which is characteristic of the Chernihiv region. The obverse side is divided into four sectors, each representing the egg painting traditions of specific regions in Ukraine: Rivne, Volyn, Zhytomyr, and Kyiv. This design underscores the diversity of Ukrainian traditions in egg decoration.

The coin is made of 999 fine silver and weighs 31.1 grams. The quality of the minting is classified as 'special uncirculated,' indicating a high level of craftsmanship. The project was designed by artist Oleksandra Kuchynska, who successfully embodied significant cultural symbols and traditions through the art of minting.

It is noteworthy that the mintage of the new commemorative coin is limited to only 7,500 pieces, making it even more valuable for collectors and admirers of Ukrainian culture. The price of the product at the time of the last sale in the NBU's online store was 8,832 hryvnias. As of April 9, 2023, the entire batch allocated for online sales was completely sold out, indicating a high demand for this coin.

This commemorative coin is part of the 'Ukrainian Heritage' series, which was established by the National Bank of Ukraine in 2005. The series is dedicated to architectural monuments, folk crafts, and traditions that shape the cultural identity of the Ukrainian people. As of April 2026, the series consists of 45 coins made from both precious and non-precious metals. Coins from this series have a limited mintage and are highly sought after by collectors, confirming their value and significance to Ukrainian culture.
