A Man Sentenced for Treason in Khmelnytskyi Region for Collaborating with Russian FSB

The Khmelnytskyi Court of Appeal has announced a sentence handed down by the Shepetivka District Court to a 60-year-old man who collaborated with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). He has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for committing treason during a state of war.

The Khmelnytskyi Court of Appeal has reported a significant ruling from the Shepetivka District Court regarding a 60-year-old man found guilty of collaborating with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). This man has been sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment along with the confiscation of his property for committing treason under wartime conditions.

According to information released by the court, in April 2023, the accused established contact with a representative of the Russian FSB through the Telegram messaging app. Acting on his own initiative, he agreed to provide military-related information in exchange for financial compensation and to carry out other tasks beneficial to the aggressor state.

As part of his activities, he was tasked with conducting reconnaissance in the Khmelnytskyi region, particularly concerning the locations of strategic facilities, their security, and identifying priorities for targeting units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). The perpetrator independently initiated the collection of data on known military sites, sending the enemy photographs, videos, addresses, and explanatory notes. For completing these tasks, he received financial rewards.

The man was apprehended on August 30, 2023, after he completed another assignment, which involved placing a GPS tracker under a railway bridge support. This incident occurred while he was attempting to gather information for the enemy.

During the court proceedings, the accused did not admit his guilt. He claimed that his intentions were entirely different, stating that he merely wanted to 'have some fun in retirement' and earn a little money for his grandchildren. According to him, the first person to contact him and offer easy money was someone he believed to be a representative of Ukrainian special services, with whom he claimed he was 'playing a game.' He insisted that he did not initiate or carry out tasks against the state and that the materials he sent were found online. For this activity, he was reportedly paid approximately 3,000 to 4,000 hryvnias.

It is worth noting that earlier, Ukrinform reported on the sentencing of a Russian informant to eight years in prison for tracking the temporary deployment locations of aviation and the flight schedules of combat helicopters of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Sumy region.
