Significant Increase in Private Air Defense Groups Expected in Kharkiv Region by Year-End

The Kharkiv region is set to see a substantial rise in the number of private air defense groups by the end of this year, according to Oleg Synegubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

In a recent statement, Oleg Synegubov announced that the Kharkiv region is anticipating a significant increase in the number of private air defense (AD) groups by the end of this year. This announcement comes as he commented on the results of an experimental project being implemented in the region, which is aimed at enhancing the local air defense capabilities.

Synegubov highlighted that the project, which is currently operating in an experimental mode, has already shown positive results. He noted that the air defense groups have successfully intercepted drones, including the Shahed models, which attempted to target critical infrastructure facilities such as the TETs-5 thermal power plant. “We will continue to develop such a system, and it will multiply several times by the end of this year. Unfortunately, I cannot provide more details,” he stated.

According to Synegubov, the initial successes in combating drones indicate the effectiveness of involving the private sector in the air defense system. This project has received support from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, which is actively engaging new enterprises in the formation of air defense groups.

It is worth noting that on March 30, Ukraine's Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov also confirmed that the project to involve the private sector in the air defense system is already yielding initial results. One of the participating companies has established its own air defense group, which successfully shot down Shahed and Zala unmanned aerial vehicles. This demonstrates that private companies can effectively complement state efforts in ensuring air security.

Furthermore, the formation of new air defense groups is ongoing at an additional 13 enterprises that have received authorized economic operator status from the Ministry of Defense. This indicates a proactive engagement of businesses in the defense of the country against aerial threats.

Thus, Kharkiv is becoming an important hub for the development of private initiatives in the defense sector, which could significantly enhance the security level of the region. In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, such innovations are extremely critical for ensuring reliable protection against aggressors.
