Body of Nepali Mercenary Fighting for Russia Found in Donetsk Region

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has reported the discovery of the body of a Nepali mercenary who was killed in the Donetsk region while fighting alongside Russian forces.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has released information regarding the discovery of the body of a Nepali mercenary who lost his life in the Donetsk region while fighting for Russian troops. Identified as Madan Kumal, born on November 8, 1995, he became part of the Russian army after signing a contract on October 16, 2023, in Moscow.

Madan Kumal signed a four-year contract, after which he was assigned to military unit No. 29328. This unit has previously recorded numerous cases of mass desertions among foreign recruits in the Russian army. Following several weeks of training, which did not provide him with adequate military preparation, Kumal was sent to the front line, where he was forced to acquire combat skills 'on the go.'

Subsequently, Kumal was transferred to the 1st Rifle Platoon of the 2nd Rifle Company of the 3rd Rifle Battalion of the 87th Separate Rifle Regiment, which is part of the 51st Combined Arms Army of the Russian Federation (military unit 34479). In February 2024, when he had already realized the situation he was in, he was offered the chance to obtain Russian citizenship. However, on March 30, Kumal wrote a refusal, explaining his decision by his desire to return home.

During his five months of service, his family in Nepal became alarmed and began protesting, demanding the return of mercenaries from Russia. They submitted an official appeal to the Nepali consul, but unfortunately, they were unable to bring Kumal back—he was killed during an attempt to storm Ukrainian positions.

In the early stages of his service, Kumal was 'lucky': he was stationed at defensive positions and did not participate in assault actions. However, due to catastrophic losses among Russian infantry, the command was forced to send him into an attack, which ultimately led to his death.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine warns foreign citizens about the dangers of traveling to Russia and any work on its territory, especially illegal work. Such a trip could result in a real risk of ending up in an assault unit without proper training and chances of survival.

As reported by Ukrinform, Russia systematically recruits citizens from African countries to participate in the war against Ukraine, using them as 'cannon fodder.' This practice raises concerns among the international community and human rights organizations.
