Military Officer in Cherkasy Demands $12,000 from Comrade for Release from Ukrainian Armed Forces

In Cherkasy Oblast, law enforcement officials have uncovered a military officer who demanded $12,000 in illegal benefits in exchange for helping a comrade secure his release from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported by the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police of Ukraine, as informed by the Ukrinform agency.

In a recent development in Cherkasy Oblast, a military officer has been apprehended by law enforcement for allegedly soliciting a bribe of $12,000. The officer promised to assist a fellow serviceman in obtaining his discharge from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This information was disclosed by the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police of Ukraine, which has been actively investigating corruption within the military ranks.

The accused officer, who serves in one of the military units, assured his comrade that he could resolve a medical issue by leveraging his influence over the head of the permanent military-medical commission at the local recruitment and social support center. The officer’s promises included procuring medical documents that would certify the comrade's unfitness for further military service due to health reasons, which would subsequently facilitate his discharge from the military.

To conceal his illicit activities, the military officer enlisted the help of an intermediary. However, law enforcement officials managed to document the receipt of the bribe, leading to the officer's arrest under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Following his arrest, the officer was formally charged under part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to abuse of influence.

The penalties stipulated by this article are severe, potentially resulting in a prison sentence of up to eight years, along with the possibility of asset confiscation. The exposure of this corruption scheme is attributed to the collaborative efforts of operatives from the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police, the State Bureau of Investigations, and the Internal Security Department within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, under the auspices of the Military Law Enforcement Command.

Operational measures to uncover the suspect were conducted by officers from the Strategic Investigations Department in Cherkasy Oblast, alongside investigators from the investigative department based in the city of Cherkasy, under the procedural guidance of the Cherkasy Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the defense sector of the Central region.

This incident is not isolated; it follows a recent case in Zhytomyr Oblast where a former serviceman from the recruitment center and two active military personnel were caught aiding conscripts in evading mobilization for a fee. This highlights the pressing issues of corruption within the military that require urgent attention and resolution.
