Ukraine's Foreign Ministry Works on Reestablishing Embassy in Syria
The spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgiy Tikhiy, announced the initiation of efforts to restore the Ukrainian embassy in Syria, emphasizing the significance of this step for the development of bilateral relations.
Georgiy Tikhiy, the spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has officially announced the commencement of work aimed at reestablishing the Ukrainian embassy in Syria. During a briefing held in Kyiv, Tikhiy highlighted the importance of this initiative for enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations. He reminded attendees of the agreement reached regarding the reopening of embassies for both Ukraine and Syria in Damascus and Kyiv.
According to Tikhiy, in January 2026, Ukraine received consent from the Syrian side to open an embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic, in accordance with Article 2 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. This development confirms the intentions of both countries to restore high-level diplomatic ties.
The spokesperson noted that a decree has already been issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which approves an action plan for organizing the activities of the Ukrainian embassy in Syria. Tikhiy also reported that the implementation of this decree has already begun, with ongoing efforts to establish the staffing structure for the new diplomatic mission, as well as searching for suitable premises for the embassy.
Furthermore, during a recent visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Syria, the Syrian side expressed readiness to commence operations for the Syrian embassy in Kyiv in the near future. Tikhiy believes that the opening of mutual diplomatic missions will mark a new phase in the development of relations between Ukraine and Syria.
On April 5, 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky made his first visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. During his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Zelensky discussed a range of important issues, including security, defense, as well as energy and infrastructure cooperation between the two countries.
After his meeting with Syrian counterpart Assad Hasan al-Shaybani, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha confirmed the information that the embassies of both countries in Kyiv and Damascus will be reopened. This move reflects Ukraine's desire to reactivate its diplomatic efforts in the region and strengthen its position in the Middle East.
The restoration of the embassy in Syria serves as an important signal not only for bilateral relations but also for the international community, as it demonstrates Ukraine's readiness for active dialogue with countries that hold strategic significance in the context of contemporary global challenges. This also opens new avenues for cooperation across various sectors, which could positively impact the economic development of both nations.
