Estonian Foreign Minister: Europe Also Needs Security Guarantees from Ukraine

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has asserted that Europe requires security guarantees from Ukraine, given its unique experience in warfare. He emphasized this viewpoint in a post on the X platform, highlighting the historic moment for Ukraine's integration into the European Union and NATO.

In a recent statement, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna expressed his belief that Europe is in need of security guarantees from Ukraine, particularly in light of the country's extensive experience in military conflict. Tsahkna shared his thoughts on the social media platform X, underscoring that the current moment represents a pivotal opportunity for Ukraine's integration into both the European Union and NATO.

The head of Estonia's foreign affairs ministry pointed out that such a decision would serve as a crucial security guarantee not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe. 'NATO speaks not only about the need to provide security guarantees to Ukraine but also about the fact that our region requires security guarantees from Ukraine, as Ukraine is currently the largest, most effective, and most experienced military force in our region,' Tsahkna emphasized.

He further articulated his concerns regarding the implications of leaving Ukraine in what he termed a 'gray zone,' suggesting that this would only facilitate the continuation of Russian aggression on the European continent. 'Therefore, we must consider this comprehensively, as these 'gray zones,' neutral countries, or buffer zones—whatever we choose to call them—are merely a green light for Putin to continue his aggression against Europe. Thus, we need to recognize that this is also our opportunity: Ukraine is currently fighting not only for itself and its freedom but is also giving us time to establish a new structure for European security,' the minister added.

It is noteworthy that on April 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an agreement to strengthen security guarantees for Ukraine following discussions with representatives of American leaders Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks marked a significant step in bolstering international support for Ukraine amid ongoing aggression from Russia.

Additionally, on March 25, Zelensky stated that the United States was offering security guarantees to Kyiv only in exchange for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the non-occupied part of Donbas. This statement elicited mixed reactions, including from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who labeled the Ukrainian president's remarks as untrue.

In response, Zelensky insisted that during the negotiation process, the U.S. had signaled its readiness to provide security guarantees after the Armed Forces of Ukraine withdrew from Donbas. This situation highlights the complexities of international relations and the necessity for a clear strategy to ensure security in the region.
