Myron Markevych Comments on Rumors of Possible Coaching Change for Ukraine National Team
Renowned Ukrainian coach Myron Markevych has addressed the swirling rumors regarding his potential appointment as the head coach of the Ukraine national football team, succeeding Serhiy Rebrov.
Renowned Ukrainian coach Myron Markevych has commented on the rumors surrounding the possibility of his appointment as the head coach of the national football team of Ukraine, replacing Serhiy Rebrov. The 75-year-old specialist, who has extensive experience in Ukrainian football, noted that he cannot express his opinion on the matter at this time.
“For now, I am not giving any comments. It is not the right time,” Markevych was quoted by Tribuna.com. These words indicate that the coach is unwilling to discuss a situation that is currently raising many questions among fans and experts alike.
It is worth recalling that under Serhiy Rebrov’s leadership, the Ukraine national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, losing to Sweden with a score of 1:3 in the playoff qualifying match. This result was a significant disappointment for Ukrainian fans who had hoped for a successful performance on the international stage.
Rebrov has been at the helm of the national team since 2023. During his tenure, the blue and yellows managed to qualify for Euro 2024, but they were unable to advance beyond the group stage in the continental championship. Overall, in the 34 matches that the team played under his leadership, Ukraine secured 16 victories, suffered 10 defeats, and drew in another eight games.
Serhiy Rebrov's contract is set for a few more months, and he combines his role with that of vice-president of the Ukrainian Football Association. This combination of responsibilities may create an additional burden for the coach, especially given the high stakes involved in the performance of the national team.
Myron Markevych, for his part, has experience working with the Ukraine national team, having led it in 2010. At that time, he combined his coaching duties with the Kharkiv club Metalist and the national team. However, in August 2010, Markevych was forced to resign due to disagreements with the decision of the Football Federation of Ukraine, which deducted nine points from Metalist over suspicions of involvement in a match-fixing scandal against Karpaty.
Markevych's last position was with Lviv's Karpaty, with whom he terminated his contract in 2024. This indicates that the coach currently has no active role in professional football, which may increase the likelihood of his return to the national team should such an opportunity arise.
Previously, Serhiy Rebrov reacted emotionally to questions about a possible resignation following Ukraine's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He also outlined the reasons for the defeat in the match against Sweden, further highlighting the tense atmosphere surrounding his coaching career.
Thus, the question of the future of the head coach of the Ukraine national team remains open, and fans and experts are eagerly awaiting further news on the development of the situation.
