Peace Talks and Collaboration with the U.S. Team: Zelensky Engages in Dialogue with the Pope
On April 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a significant conversation with Pope Leo XIV, discussing not only peace negotiations but also the escalating situation in Ukraine amid renewed Russian attacks.
Today, April 8, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in an important conversation with Pope Leo XIV, during which they discussed not only the issues surrounding peace negotiations but also the current situation in Ukraine against the backdrop of new attacks from Russia. The head of state reported this on his Telegram channel, noting that during their conversation, Russian forces were once again striking Ukrainian cities.
Zelensky revealed that at the moment of their discussion, an attack was ongoing, involving hundreds of 'Shahed' drones and dozens of missiles targeting Ukrainian settlements. 'In fact, the attack has been ongoing in waves since nightfall, and at least five regions have already been under fire. There has not been a single hour of calm for our people, and this is Russia's response to our proposal for a ceasefire during Easter. The Russians have effectively increased the intensity of their strikes, and instead of silence in the skies, they are creating an Easter escalation. This cannot be ignored, and I am grateful to everyone in the world who is not silent about this,' he wrote.
The President also expressed gratitude to the Pope for his assistance in the return of abducted children and for all the humanitarian aid that the Vatican is providing to Ukraine, especially during this difficult winter. 'We also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region,' added Zelensky, emphasizing the importance of international support during this challenging time.
Volodymyr Zelensky also extended his wishes to the Pope and the believers celebrating Easter this Sunday, wishing them a blessed holiday and peace. 'Of course, we would be happy to see His Holiness in Ukraine on an apostolic visit. I am especially grateful that the Pope remembers Ukraine, Ukrainians, and prays for peace for our people,' the president noted.
It is important to recall that the situation in Ukraine remains tense. According to information from Ukrinform, the number of casualties in Kyiv region due to today's Russian attack has risen to eight, including a child. Unfortunately, one person has died as a result of these horrific events.
During this difficult time, it is crucial for the international community to continue supporting Ukraine and to pay attention to the ongoing aggression from Russia. Efforts being made towards achieving peace must be backed by actions, not just words, as lives depend on this.
