Mircea Lucescu Steps Down as Head Coach of Romania's National Football Team

Mircea Lucescu, the distinguished Romanian football coach, has officially concluded his tenure as the head coach of Romania's national football team. This announcement was made public through an official statement from the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), which confirmed the news in a recent press release.

The news comes in the wake of recent setbacks for the Romanian team, which suffered a 0-1 defeat against Turkey in March. This loss proved to be pivotal, as the Romanian squad failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, a significant disappointment for fans and the federation's leadership alike.

Following this match, the 80-year-old Lucescu experienced health issues that led to his hospitalization. This development was another factor influencing the decision regarding his resignation. It is noteworthy that Lucescu took charge of the national team in the summer of 2024, and during his tenure, the Romanian team achieved 11 victories, recorded one draw, and suffered six defeats.

This period marked Lucescu's second stint as the head coach of the Romanian national team. He previously led the team from 1981 to 1986, guiding them to the 1984 European Championship. Under his leadership, the Romanian team displayed commendable results, but unfortunately, recent years have not been as successful.

Mircea Lucescu is also well-known for his successful club coaching career. He was the head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won the Ukrainian championship eight times and lifted the UEFA Cup in 2009. Following that, he managed Dynamo Kyiv, leading them to victory in the Ukrainian Premier League during the 2020/21 season.

According to preliminary reports, the new head coach of the Romanian national team is set to be Gheorghe Hagi, who also possesses significant experience in football as both a player and a coach.
