Legendary football coach Mircea Lucescu, who recently suffered a heart attack, is currently in critical condition at a hospital in Bucharest. This alarming news was confirmed by Romania's Health Minister Alexandru Rafila, who spoke to the media outlet News.ro.
"Unfortunately, he is in critical condition. This is the information I have and can publicly confirm. He is in intensive care, in critical condition, and in the last 24-48 hours, his medical status has deteriorated," stated Rafila during an appearance on the Antena 3 television channel.
The Health Minister also noted that the 80-year-old Lucescu is receiving necessary medical assistance in the intensive care unit. However, he emphasized that he cannot make any assumptions regarding the medical prognosis for the renowned coach.
The situation regarding Lucescu's health was also commented on by Mihai Stoichiță, the technical director of the Romanian Football Federation, who visited the coach in the hospital. According to Stoichiță, Lucescu is in an artificial coma and is unable to speak. "I spent a little time with him, about five minutes; he did not respond — which is normal. We hope that everything will be alright for him, if God permits. He cannot talk, he is in an artificial coma, probably to help his body. I just looked at him and that was it. I cannot say anything else — that would be speculation," Stoichiță commented on the situation.
Mircea Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after feeling unwell during the Romanian national team's training camp following a defeat to Turkey (0-1) in the playoff qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. On April 2, the specialist unexpectedly stepped down from his position as head coach of the Romanian team, surprising many fans.
On April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction right in the hospital. Doctors had to perform resuscitation procedures three times, and the coach received his fifth stent. After experiencing severe cardiac arrhythmias that were resistant to treatment, Lucescu was placed in a medically induced coma to stabilize his condition.
Mircea Lucescu is not only a legend of Romanian football but also a former head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv. With Shakhtar, the Romanian specialist became the champion of Ukraine eight times and won the UEFA Cup in 2009. He also achieved victory in the Ukrainian Premier League with Dynamo in the 2020/21 season, solidifying his status as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Ukrainian football.
It is worth noting that earlier reports indicated that a former star of Chelsea and the Brazilian national team ended his career after receiving an unfavorable diagnosis, highlighting the importance of health for athletes and coaches in professional sports.
