Romania's Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, spoke at a press conference on April 5, expressing concern over the coach's health, noting that his medical indicators had deteriorated over the past 24 to 48 hours. "He is in the intensive care unit, in critical condition. It is difficult for me to make predictions or assumptions regarding his medical prognosis," Rafila was quoted by the Romanian publication News.ro.
Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after falling ill during a training session with the Romanian national team following a 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualification. On April 2, the coach stepped down from his position with the Romanian team, a shocking development for the football community.
On April 3, while in the hospital, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction. Medical professionals had to perform resuscitation procedures three times, and he has now had his fifth stent placed.
