French President Emmanuel Macron recently made a significant statement firmly defending the values of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He warned that regular comments questioning the United States' commitment to the Alliance could 'undermine its very essence.' Macron urged leaders of NATO member countries to take their statements seriously, emphasizing that trust is the foundation of this international organization.
This information was reported by the authoritative publication The Guardian, which quoted the French president's words. 'I believe that organizations and alliances such as NATO are defined by what remains unsaid – namely, the trust that lies at their core, and, by the way, this often relates to military and strategic issues. If you question your commitments every day, you dilute their very essence,' Macron stated, highlighting the importance of stability in international relations.
The French leader also stressed that all countries that signed the North Atlantic Treaty must support the Alliance and refrain from commenting on every event occurring in the world. 'We need to be serious, and if you want to be serious, you should not say the opposite of what you said the day before. I think there is too much talk here,' he added, pointing to the need for more measured and responsible statements from NATO member leaders.
In addition, Macron expressed his views on military actions in the region. He believes that initiating a military operation to forcibly open the Strait of Hormuz is unrealistic and called for a restoration of dialogue to resolve the conflict. These words reflect the French president's desire for a peaceful resolution to international disputes.
It is worth recalling that on April 1, American President Donald Trump stated in an interview with The Telegraph that he is seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the United States from NATO. This came after allies refused to join his military actions against Iran. Trump had previously claimed that America does not need help in the war with Iran, and in a post on the social network Truth Social on March 17, he emphasized that 'I always knew that the Alliance would never help the U.S.'
These events raise questions about NATO's future and its role in global politics. Trump's statements have caused concern among European allies, who believe that the U.S. commitment to the Alliance is critically important for ensuring collective security. At the same time, Macron's words may be an attempt to strengthen unity among NATO member countries and underscore the importance of trust in relations between allies.
